Our History

On November 3, 1984, a group of Toy Fox Terrier fanciers met at Daisy and Ed Gergick's farm near Tonganoxie, Kansas. An election was held and Daisy Gergick was chosen president, Sandra Stamper vice-president and Lillie Rhoads secretary/treasurer. A constitution and by-laws was approved and signed by the officers. This constitution and the Heartland Toy Fox Terrier Association was approved by the United Kennel Club January, 1985. At the 1989 election Lillie was chosen president, Daisy vice-president and Deborah Kobolt secretary. Friends and sponsors from the start were Ruby and Earl Klaes, Mary Parks, W. D. and Dorothy Cody, Nelda Shoemake, Ron and Colleen Byrd, Steve Utter, Roger and Freddie Watts, Loren and Shirley Stroud and others. Heartlands first United Kennel Club licensed champion point show weekend was held July 20 and 21, 1985 at the Best Western Motel in Emporia, Kansas. Earl Klaes and Mary Parks were judges. Until 1994 Spring, Summer and/or Fall shows were held in Emporia, utilizing the available motel space for sleeping, dining and a show site all under one roof. April 1994 the first Tonganoxie, Kansas shows hosted by Daisy Gergick were held at the county fairgrounds. That summer shows were held at the Lawrence, Kansas fairgrounds and hosted by Dorothy West and Linda Faust. The summer shows of 1998 were sponsored by Pauline Deniston at the Holiday Inn, Overland Park, Kansas. On April 29, 1990, the Spring National Toy Fox Terrier Association show rotated to the Heartland Club and was held in Emporia, Kansas. National president Ruby Klaes and Ann Mauermann officiated. Lillie Rhoads was National Judge and chose Ronald and Colleen Byrd's Pennie Candy as National Grand Champion. September 16, 1991 U.K.C. Field Representative Richard Korlemeier attended the Heartland Show and reported to U.K.C. Vicki Rand of Field Operations congratulated the Heartland Club's members on a job well done. In 2001 the club again held the national show, this time in Lawrence, Kansas. In 2005 the club celebrated it's 20th anniversary in Perry, Kansas. In the past, Heartland has been successful hosting in April and July; two Toy Fox Terriers Show weekends in Kansas that include a raffle, auction and lunch. A membership meeting and the Saturday Night Banquet have also been well attended. The club plans for the future are to continue this schedule of events. The object of the H.T.F.T.A. continues to be "to influence and encourage the fanciers and breeders of purebred Toy Fox Terriers. To promote the breed, and increase its popularity."

Conformation events, or Dog Shows, are competitive events for purebreds where a judge evaluates a dogs structure as it compares to a written description of the perfect specimen of that breed called a standard. While it may appear that dogs are being judged against one another, each dog is actually being compared to the judge's mental image of the perfect dog of that breed. The judges must be familiar with not only the standards of the breeds they judge,but with the conformation rules and regulations as well. Each dog is examined by the judge in a posed position and must also gait in a pattern to allow the judge to evaluate its efficiency of movement. From the UKC site: www.ukcdogs.com.Conformation.htm
